Sustainability & Material Reuse
LoftbOX contributes to environmental responsibility by repurposing discarded windsurf sails—materials that are notoriously difficult to recycle. These sails are typically made from composite fabrics such as Mylar, Dacron, and laminated monofilms, which do not decompose naturally and are challenging to break down or reuse within the sailing industry.
Thousands of sails are thrown away globally each year as they lose performance quality or sustain minor damage. Despite their durability, these materials often end up in landfills, contributing to long-term plastic and fabric pollution.
By transforming these sails into modular storage systems, LoftbOX gives them a purposeful second life. The project diverts waste from the environment while highlighting the value of adaptive reuse in design. Instead of being forgotten, each sail continues to serve—in motion, suspended above us, carrying new meaning and function.
LoftbOX gives discarded windsurf sails a purposeful second life, significantly reducing landfill waste. Each year, approximately 2,000 tonnes of sailcloth—composed of tough, composite materials like Mylar, Dacron, and monofilm—is discarded globally because it cannot be recycled in conventional systems.
